5 Things I Love About Fall

“There is a time of year in New York, when even before the first leaf falls, you can feel the seasons click. The air is crisp, summer is gone, and for the first night in a long time, you need a blanket on your bed.”

– Carrie Bradshaw

Remember this scene from Sex & the City? (It’s the finale for Season 4 entitled “I Heart NY” if you’re wondering.)

Carrie calls Big simply to say, “It’s fall.”

Well, it is indeed fall. And as sad as I always am to say goodbye to summer, once that first September fashion issue arrives in my mailbox, I start to get excited about the change in season.

October happens to be my favorite month. The manfriend and I got married in October, and on the 10th we’ll celebrate our 11th wedding anniversary.

Aside from my own personal romance story, there are many more reasons that I love October.

Here are a few.

Line-Divider Fall-Photos#1. You’ve Got Mail Marathons

You’ve Got Mail is the perfect movie to get you in the mood for fall. It’s even more enchanting and nostalgic if you happen to be a New Yorker. The movie was filmed on the Upper West Side, which is where I used to live and where I happened to meet the manfriend. Obviously this movie is special to me. And I think it truly captures the beauty of New York in all seasons.

#2. Perfect Running ConditionsFall-Photos

Each February, I run the Mercedes Half Marathon in Birmingham, Alabama with my best friend Missy. It’s a healthy tradition we started a few years ago, and this will be our third time to finish the marathon together.

I always start my SERIOUS marathon training in October when the temps get a bit cooler. This time of the year is absolutely perfect for running outdoors. Plus, I live in the Hudson Valley, which is about an hour north of Manhattan. The fall foliage up here is legendary. When you’re surrounded by scenery like this, you forget you’re exercising!

Fall-Photos2#3. Pumpkin Spice EVERYTHING

Yes, I know it’s over-hyped. Yes, I know there’s nothing natural about #PSL. But I don’t care. I love all things pumpkin.

Pumpkin coffee, pumpkin creamer, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin ravioli. I could go on, but then I’ll sound like the guy from Forrest Gump talking about all the ways you can prepare shrimp.

Dunkin Donuts now offers Pumpkin Spice candles that smell so delicious I wanted to eat one. But I ordered an iced pumpkin coffee instead. It may be fall, but it was still too hot to make the transition from iced to hot. Not yet.

Fall-Photos4#4. Fabulous Fall Boots

Buying new boots is probably my absolute favorite thing about fall. I would wear boots year round if it were socially acceptable and they were air-conditioned.

Tall boots. The taller the better. And in every color. Lately I’m in to over-the-knee and thigh-hi options. When worn with tights in the same color, they make my legs look extremely long.

Plus, you guys all know that I’m a dresses girl. Dresses, tights and boots…the perfect formula for my fall uniform.

Fall-Photos5#5. October Baseball

There is still a small chance that the Yankees will make it into the World Series this year. I’m actually hoping for a Subway World Series between the Yanks and the Mets, but that’s just me being a selfish New Yorker.

One of my favorite memories is being at Yankee Stadium in 2009 for Game 6 against the Angels. When Mariano Rivera threw the final strike that sent us to the World Series, I looked at the manfriend and screamed “This is the best day EVER!” to which he asked, “What about our wedding?” My reply was, “this is so much better!” Priorities people. Priorities.
