The Kimye Vogue Cover

Sometimes FASHION + ART = FART.

The fashion elite has had their Kiki de Montparnasse panties in a wad ever since news leaked that Kim Kardashian & Kanye West would appear on the cover of the April issue of Vogue. How could Anna Wintour do this to the fashion world?

My disdain for the cover has nothing to do with disliking Kanye West or Kim Kardashian at all. I happen to think that Kanye is an incredibly talented artist, despite his annoying ego. No matter how hard I try, I just can’t stop myself from spontaneously dancing and singing along to Gold Digger or Stronger.

I also think Kim Kardashian is incredibly beautiful and believe that for the most part, she has great style. By showcasing her, um, assets, she has made it “okay” for women to be curvy and her popularity has probably stopped several eating disorders in their tracks.

My real problem with Kanye being on the cover of Vogue is the fact that he defaced a Birkin bag. Back in December, Kanye commissioned artist George Condo to paint a nude orgy scene on the iconic bag as a Christmas gift to Kim. Who does that? An Hermes Birkin bag is one of the most coveted possessions of any fashionista, and Kanye’s “personalization” of what was already a work of art is just downright criminal. Couldn’t he just have asked Condo to create an original painting for Kim? You know, the kind that hangs on the wall?

Let’s be honest, Kanye. The only person who can (really) create wearable art is Rei Kawakubo.

I’m certainly not going to cancel my Vogue subscription over this fiasco. I will continue to celebrate any fashion magazine that has the balls to put a woman with curves on the cover. However, allowing Kanye on the cover after he defaced a Birkin bag is akin to putting Alex Rodriguez on a billboard advertising the Baseball Hall of Fame. It’s a disgrace.
